A Pregnant Perspective on Professional Running

A pregnant perspective on professional running…or in simple words-“what pregnancy has taught me about being a professional runner.”

When I think about the term “professional”, I envision a person performing their job to high standards, which is something that I always felt like I did. However, it took training while pregnant for me to really take a hard look and re-evaluate my pre-pregnancy training.

This is both embarrassing and humbling at the same time. Don’t get me wrong. I held myself to high standards and expected the very best of myself each day…but now I realize it was only in certain aspects of my running career. Basically, I suffered from what I like to call the “distance runner mindset” (did I just say ‘distance’ runner? I mean ‘middle-distance’, obviously!). The “distance runner mindset” is the internal need that many endurance runners feel to get in their weekly mileage through the routine of long runs, workouts, etc. The sole focus of the “distance runner mindset” is on running/mileage. Coach Mike Byrnes

I originally had a different post planned for today. However, my dear friend and coach, Mike Byrnes, passed away this past weekend. Therefore, today, my post is dedicated to one of the most important people to ever grace my life.

I know that Coach meant a lot of different things to a lot of different people. His accomplishments and contributions to the world are far too many to ever recount so I am not going to try and cover all of those today. If you want to read them, simply google “Mike Byrnes, Track & Field”, and the resume you’ll find will be long and distinguished. No, instead, I want to give you a small glance into my time with Coach. Several months back, I was approached to write down some of my memories of Mike and now seemed like an appropriate time to share them more publicly. Here is just a glance at Coach Mike and I’s story. But 1,500-meter specialist Sarah Brown got the shock of her life when, after some lagging weeks of training with no apparent cause, she discovered she was pregnant—despite using an intrauterine device (IUD) as birth control. (IUDs are typically 99 percent effective.) Due March 22, Brown, who lives in Solana Beach, California, with her coach and husband Darren Brown, is taking it all in stride by keeping on track to make her goal of competing at the 2016 Olympic trials next July. “If the odds can be so stacked against me getting pregnant and yet I still manage to find a way,” she recently wrote on her blog, “then who’s to say that I can’t beat the odds again?” We got her to weigh in on the joys of cross-training, adaptability and starting new chapters. See My Schedule – Travel & Training at 19 Weeks

As mentioned last week, we entered this week knowing that flexibility and adaptability would be paramount.  The last time Sarah traveled cross-country, she started to notice the onset of her PGP (SPD).  We knew that another long flight this week could potentially cause those issues to return, and worse, if we weren’t careful.  We also knew that there would be some shifting that had to take place in our regular “routine” based on an early flight Wednesday, long day Thursday and early flight Friday.  With all that in mind, we entered this week fully accepting that it may be a less-than-ideal week of training … and that this would be “ok” as long as she came out the other end healthy and feeling good.  Here’s what the week looked like  and a few quick insights into new modalities, double-runs (*gasp*) and unfortunate circumstances that happen at just the right time … Continue reading

“Quack, Quack, Waddle, Waddle”

Am I … *gasp* … waddling?!

Sadly, that was actually a legitimate question that popped into my head around the 15 week pregnancy mark. Waddling. Me. Yes, the idea was preposterous. I was only 15 weeks pregnant! Waddling is a term saved for those last few weeks before delivery.
